Cool new job continues to be cool at the 3 week mark. The company is sending me to Germany tomorrow, which is exciting. I'll be there to observe procedures (my invention! used in actual human beings! quite exciting! and a little scary!).

Anyone have any recommendations for geeky/fannish tourist attractions in the Mainz area? I should have two afternoons free to explore. Earlier in the week when I thought I'd be in Mannheim I'd planned an excursion to a comic book store, a fabric store, and the local historic water tower (since there's a picture of it in the Thurn & Taxis boardgame). I think I can still take the train out there, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask if anyone had recommendations closer in.

There's a Gutenberg museum with a working replica of his printing press. And there's also A Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding, with remains of five Greco-Roman ships, some of the earliest ships built with standardized production.
