I've been having a good time lately shopping for and making props for the book. Here are some of the things I've either ordered on eBay or am in the process of making:

Host sword
so he can stab the boar

Gawain sword
so he can wave it at the Green Knight

HD hunt crossbow
for shooting at the boar

Ninja stars
the forest ninjas throw these at Gawain while he travels

HD priest rosary
costume accessory

Gawain rosary
part of the illustration of Gawain's 5 virtues

Torches for HD servants
for the lads with lights who follow Gawain to bed that last night

Wine barrel: bathub and tree planters
ah, the bathtub scene; one of several gratuitous naked Gawain scenes

WIP: oil lamp for Gawain's HD bedroom
this is attempt #2; I tried at first to make a functional oil lamp with real clay, but it turns out that takes actual skill to manipulate; this version is Sculpey (plastic) so we'll have to keep the flame a little farther away; still needs a few more coats of paint to distress it before it's done and ready to go on it's stand; it's been a disproportionate amount of work for this small prop, but I've been having a good time playing with the clay.

WIP: newly stained chariot
progress! it looks much less like raw plywood now; next step is to add a bas-relief frieze around the edge; I ordered some plastic toys to glue in place for that

WIP: Gawain's shield
I know how to make laminated curved wooden shapes now; it feels like only a small step from this to complete mastery of everything. :p

Gawain's shield design - outside
It was a challenge to come up with a design that matched the text and yet wasn't totally boring; I hope it comes out OK when I try to implement it for real

Gawain's shield design - inside
Frida Kahlo as Our Lady of Guadalupe :)

I love the shield design--all of these look amazing. I'm so enjoying looking over your shoulder, so to speak, as you go through this process.

Thank you! I had a good time with the shield - we see so much of it I wanted it to look cool. I just posted some photos of the finished piece ... it actually turned out pretty well. Even though I'm ridiculously slow about replying to comments, I do really appreciate the encouragement. I've been having some long days recently and it helps.

My approach is to make all the things that seem like they'd be fun to make and then buy or fake the rest. I love crafts and this just gives me an excuse to go nuts. :)

Cool! The more advance notice the better, but I can always use spontaneous help as well, either as a random extra or as crew. :)

At the risk of being spammy, I have to say I'd really love to see these documented and up on my site. They're gorgeous and likely prizewinners come Halloween.
Email me (my username @gmail) to discuss futher.

It's too bad that I don't live nearby to come help. Making props looks like fun!

I've officially hit the point in my summer break where I look around and say, "Yup, nothing in particular to do for the next month." I need to come up with a project to keep myself busy.

Idle hands! A tragedy! :) If you weren't so far away I'd be able to put you to work painting or sanding or something! If I come up with a good long-distance task I'll let you know ... ;)
