I'm starting to feel the pinch of my self-imposed deadlines; it's a good thing I'm going into this phase well-rested! July was mostly devoted to acquiring props. The shopping was fun, but getting to bury myself in arts & crafts for days on end was really great. Now that it's August, I'll be switching focus to costume work. To keep on schedule, I'll need to have the cast finalized by mid-August so I can get started getting measurements and farming out at least some of the sewing. Casting is proving tricky but it's not terribly unexpected and I remain optimistic that it will all work out eventually.

So, if you've been thinking about volunteering and I haven't heard from you yet, now is a good time to speak up!

Green Knight's first axe
materials: reshaped plastic hubcap, off-the shelf axe handle, decorated with paint and glass stones

Bows & arrows for High Desert hunters
materials: bow body of random plastic bars, clay finials held on with twine, dowel arrows with feathers and painted foam arrowheads glued on

Various spears
top three for the High Desert hunters, bottom one for Gawain
materials: painted plywood tips, decorated with yarn and twine, glued into painted pvc pipes

Gawain's shield
I think this came out pretty well. The decorations are sort of fragile, but the shield itself could certainly take a beating.
materials: laminated plywood, vinyl edging and grips, brass tacks, mini-blind slat star, paint, decoupaged paper Mary

High Desert furniture
a mirror stand for the High Desert guest bedroom
I'm super impressed with myself on the paint job here
materials: freecycled nightstand, paint

High Desert music
two traditional Chinese instruments: the erhu (two string fiddle) and the dizi (long flute)
erhu: scrap wood, clay, thread, paint
dizi: pvc pipe, paint

Camelot flowers
I figure I'll use these anywhere I need extra color on the Camelot set; they're cheap and easy to make
materials: tissue paper, pipe cleaners

Camelot star decoration
at $2 each, I couldn't resist getting a few; may use with or without lights inside

High Desert dishes
I love San Francisco's Chinatown! I was able to get 8 place settings as well as some serving dishes while staying well within budget. :)

Gawain's helmet
ebay came through again, this time with a vaguely conquistador-shaped aluminum hard hat; just needs decoration

Tunic prototype-generic hunter
My first attempt at a tunic, very strictly adhering to the historical evidence: narrow fabric, only rectangle and triangle shaped pieces. It looks pretty dorky when actually on: it's overly wide/baggy in the shoulders and the front gore is quite odd.

Gown prototype-generic hunter
My second attempt. I allowed myself to be a little more wasteful of fabric and narrowed the top of the center panel while letting the bottom flare out in lieu of the center gore. I also varied the neckline and sleeves.

Action shots with prototype clothes
Both of these prototypes will be used for the High Desert hunt scenes, so I wanted to see what they'd look like complete with underclothes and hunting gear. Prop Mistress [livejournal.com profile] eekabelle aims her bow while [livejournal.com profile] mister_b33 is ready with the spear.

We did a little location scouting this weekend while at Henry Coe State Park and found some good places. I continue to practice the time panorama shot. It's trickier than it seems, so the practice is good for me.

Deer Hunt location
golden grass-covered hills and scattered trees in a little-traveled area, great for fleeing caravans of deer-people

Fox Hunt location
brush for the fox to lose the hounds in

So I haven't heard from you guys yet and wanted to reiterate my interest.

Also wanted to mention that I am in India bet. Aug 21 - Sep. 19.

So if you need anything from me, please keep that in mind.

Thanks!

Anna...I'm awed at both your craftsmanship skills and your photoshopping skills. These just look absolutely stunning. I love what you did with the nightstand in particular!

Amazing work!

I love how you can use obviously recycled materials like the hubcap because your characters would need to make use of obviously recycled materials like a hubcap. :)

Thanks!
I imagine the hubcap axe as some sort of precious heirloom, handed down over the ages. They've replaced the handle a dozen times and keep adding jewels and engraving. It's even spawned knock-offs, newly made in this "ancient traditional" form. :)

Exciting! :)

I wish I could afford to fly down for a bunch of weekends in a row :\ Hopefully I'll be able to make it to at least one of the shoots... I'll let you know as soon as I know.

I'm looking forward to helping out! I should fly into the Bay Area, right? You're not going to be in SoCal?

Almost all of the scenes will be in the Bay Area (including that first weekend) so SJC's a good airport to pick.

Wow, that's lotsa Robs on that golden grass-covered hill. Very helpful for perspective, indeed.

You're doing a fine job with that location scouting. Rebecca and I have a Joshua Tree trip in the works, and we'll keep you posted.

:) I think this technique's a keeper. I love to take landscape shots while hiking, but without people in them for scale, they often end up looking unimpressive.

I'm glad you're still keeping J-Tree scouting in mind - I appreciate it!

[livejournal.com profile] traumentwerfer just reminded me that I haven't pinged you yet to say I'm interested in taking part in this project. I found the TIOBE on a friend's coffee table and think it's awesome, and I'm thrilled with the idea of being part of the next one. Let me know how I can get involved. (I'm out of the country most of next month, though.)
