Summary: In which a mutant too famous to cull is dropped like a grenade into the midst of the peace process, a foolish monarch proves himself secretly shrewd, the power of friendship functions as a force multiplier, and it is discovered that in the Great Game of espionage, the dealer does not always win.
This fic makes me giddy with joy in the same way my favorite Heyer and Bujold novels do. Karkat is grumpy and adorable all the time so I'm used to wanting to cuddle him, but the thought of him in a Regency-style military uniform is just - guh - so swoon-inducing. Not to be outdone, John is also shown to excellent advantage in this fic … he's absolutely recognizable as his silly self, but also clearly the competent friend-leader canon tells us he is.
I think this fic is accessible even if you haven't read Homestuck. I think everyone should, though, so hopefully this fic will play a part at pimping new people into the fandom. :)
