This is an excellent story! The Ivan/Byerly parts are lovely, with a delicious build-up. The democracy parts are complex and fascinating - I get sucked right back into the plot every time I read it. I'm feeling particularly inspired by the mid-life crisis introspection thread these days … after 20 years on the job I can readily believe it's equally tempting and both terrifying to change directions.
